Live bidding for Stack’s Bowers Galleries’ James A. Stack, Sr. Collection Part II auction begins today. The first half of the sale on December 9 saw record-breaking prices. The 128 U.S. gold coins offered in Part II are valued at over $10 million.

“The James A. Stack, Sr. Collection has provided us at Stack’s Bowers Galleries—and the entire marketplace—a wild and exciting ride since we announced the collection last summer,” says Brian Kendrella, president of Stack’s Bowers Galleries. “With our deeply researched catalog, expert photography, worldwide marketing, and record prices, the James A. Stack, Sr. Collection will now be rightly remembered as one of the greatest U.S. coin collections built in the 20th century.”

The auction reintroduces major U.S. gold coin rarities to the marketplace; all specimens have been off the market since at least 1951. The most anticipated lot is the long-lost Earle (1912)-Atwater (1946) 1798 Small Eagle $5, one of only five known in private collections. Expected to achieve a seven-figure price, the $5 gold coin is the sole Certified Acceptance Corporation (CAC)-verified example. It is graded About Uncirculated (AU)-53 by Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS). Also included in the sale are several rare Indian Head eagles (gold $10). Notable examples include one of the only 50 known 1907 Rounded Rims type, graded PCGS Mint State (MS)-67 (CAC) (CMQ), and the finest certified 1911-D example (PCGS MS-66) (CAC) (CMQ).

Other prominent lots include:

  • 1933 Indian Head eagle (PCGS MS-66)
  • 1830 Templeton Reid quarter eagle (gold $2½) (PCGS AU-55) (CAC)
  • 1864 Kellogg double eagle (gold $20) (PCGS AU-58+) (CAC) (CMQ)
  • “Horseman” 1850 Baldwin eagle (gold $10) (PCGS MS-63+) (CAC) (CMQ)
