A Hungarian Herder

The Hungarian Mint has unveiled the latest release in its Hungarian Herding and Hunting Breeds series. The 5,000-forint coin recognizes the Pumi, an energetic herding dog.

A front-facing Pumi appears on the obverse, with MAGYARORSZÁG (“Hungary”) above and the denomination at right. On the reverse, one Pumi stands in front of a herd of sheep while another is shown running in the background.

With a unique curly coat, the Pumi was first recognized as a breed in Hungary in the early 20th century. The American Kennel Club, on the other hand, officially recognized the breed in 2016, and the dog’s popularity has risen steadily over the years. The Pumi is still commonly owned by ranchers for herding cattle and sheep, though it is now also a well-loved companion dog.
