A Fierce Protector

On October 4, the Hungarian Mint released the sixth issue in its Hungarian Herding and Hunting Breeds coin series. The 3,000-forint coin recognizes the Kuvasz. A full-size depiction of the fluffy dog appears on the obverse, and the reverse features a close-up view, with another Kuvasz lying near a cow in the background. 

The Kuvasz originates from ancient Turkey and Tibet and has lived in Hungary since the early Middle Ages. At first, only royalty owned the large, white dogs, but as time passed, they became more popular among commoners, including farmers. Known for their gentle temperament and protective nature, the breed is an excellent guard dog for families and their livestock. After nearly being driven to extinction in Hungary during World War II, the Kuvasz has since repopulated, though with a small gene pool.
