The 42nd Coin of the Year (COTY) Awards were announced at the ANA’s World’s Fair of Money® (WFM) on August 21 in Oklahoma City. Presented by World Coin News and sponsored by The Journal of East Asian Numismatics and the WFM, the competition recognizes and encourages outstanding coin
design and innovation worldwide.

The COTY Nominating Committee selected 100 finalists (10 coins in 10 categories) from a pool of 550 coins. An international panel of judges then selected the top coin in each category. By a tight margin, the 2025 Coin of the Year was awarded to Austria’s silver 20-euro piece, “Supernova.” Its concave obverse features a colorized depiction of the Crab Nebula, based on an image taken by the Hubble Space Telescope.
